Suicide Training CE Requirement Update

Suicide Training CE Requirement Update

There is a new continuing education requirement for the renewal of your Social Work license.  All social work licensees are required to take a six hour continuing education workshop in suicide assessment and management.  The requirement became effective on January 1, 2014.

However, do not rush to take the suicide assessment and management training in 2014 or 2015.  This continuing education requirement will only count toward the required six hour suicide assessment and management requirement if this is the first full continuing education (CE) reporting period after January 1, 2014, or the first full CE reporting period after initial licensure, whichever occurs later.

What is your full continuing education reporting period?

According to the Department of Health (DoH) website, Frequently Asked Questions section, the DoH website has attempted to clarify what a “full CE reporting period” is.

When did the new requirement begin?

The requirement began on January 1, 2014. At least once every six years the required providers must complete training.

The first training must be completed during the first full continuing education (CE) reporting period after January 1, 2014, or the first full CE reporting period after initial licensure, whichever occurs later.

Examples for a two-year CE cycle:

The credential expires on May 1, 2014. At this time, their continuing education units are due. If they take the training on April 25, 2014, it would not count toward the specific suicide training requirement, but would count toward their general CE. It would not count toward the specific requirement because it was not within the first full CE cycle. But if the training was taken on May 25, 2014, it would count toward the specific suicide training requirement.

  • The credential expires on May 1, 2014. At this time, their continuing education units are not due. If they take the training on April 25, 2014, it would not count toward the specific suicide training requirement. The training would have to be taken after May 1, 2015, to be counted toward the specific suicide training requirement.

Here are two links to the DoH website with the information regarding the required suicide assessment and management training.

You need to be aware of your full CE reporting period for the suicide assessment and management training to count toward the CE suicide training requirement.  The workshop will always count toward your required 36 hours of CE, but it will only count toward the suicide training during your first full continuing education reporting period after January 1, 2014.  The suicide assessment and management training is required once every six years.

You should contact the Department of Health if you do not know when your first full continuing education reporting period begins.  The Department of Health number is 360-236-4700.

Thank you NASW Washington State Chapter.
